چکیده

We simulate the liquid silicon surface with first-principles molecular dynamics in a slab geometry. We find that the atom-density profile presents a pronounced layering, similar to those observed in low-temperature liquid metals like Ga and Hg. The depth-dependent pair correlation function shows that the effect originates from directional bonding of Si atoms at the surface, and propagates into the bulk. The layering has no major effects in the electronic and dynamical properties of the system, that are very similar to those of bulk liquid Si. To our knowledge, this is the first study of a liquid surface by first-principles molecular dynamics. @S0163-1829~99!50648-6#

X-ray reflectivity studies of liquid metal and alloy surfaces

Surface-induced atomic layering at the liquid/vapor interface in liquid metals has been observed using x-ray reflectivity on sputtered clean surfaces under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. A well-defined quasi-Bragg peak is obtained for surfaces of elemental Ga and a Ga-In alloy at large wave vectors qz;2.3–2.5 Å . These results are an unambiguous indication of atomic layering with an interlayer sp...

Polyamorphic transformations in liquid and amorphous silicon: A first-principles molecular-dynamics study

Structural transformations between disordered phases, such as liquid-liquid and amorphousamorphous transformations (polyamorphic transformations), have been a focus of interest for the past years. In water, amorphous-amorphous transformation was experimentally observed and transformation between two distinct liquid forms has also been examined [1]. Since a typical atomic configuration of silico...

Liquid-liquid transition in supercooled silicon determined by first-principles simulation.

First-principles molecular dynamics simulations reveal a liquid-liquid phase transition in supercooled elemental silicon. Two phases coexist below Tc approximately 1232 K and above pc approximately -12 kB. The low-density phase is nearly tetracoordinated, with a pseudogap at the Fermi surface, while the high-density phase is more highly coordinated and metallic in nature. The transition is obse...

Competition between Surface Layering and Surface Phase Formation in Dilute Liquid HgAu Alloys

We present temperature-dependent X-ray reflectivity measurements of liquid Hg alloyed with 0.06-0.20 atom % Au. At low Au concentrations, we find temperature-dependent surface-induced layering similar to that observed in pure Hg, except that the presence of Au reduces the layering amplitude. Upon approaching the solubility limit of Au in Hg, a new surface phase forms which is 1-2 atomic diamete...

What causes extended layering of ionic liquids on the mica surface?

Extended layering of ionic liquids (ILs) on the mica surface has been reported by several groups previously and it is generally accepted that the electrostatic interaction at the IL/mica interface is critical to the observed extended layering. Here we report that, indeed, water adsorption on the mica surface is the key to the extended layering of ionic liquids. The atomic force microscopy (AFM)...
